Illaoi's Skills and abilities
Illaoi, famously known as the Kraken Priestess, is a fearful laning champion with immense stationary power. She has massive damage potential that you take advantage of to eliminate enemies.
However, Illaoi’s mobility isn’t always the best, but she compensates for her immense strength and sustains. Her powers are very telegraphed in short-ranged abilities, making her an excellent choice against melee champions.
Here’s a closer look at Illaoi’s skills and abilities:
Prophet of an Elder God: Illaoi will periodically spawn a Tentacle on nearby impassable terrains if no enemies are going through the Prophet of an Elder God. The Tentacle can remain on the battlefield until it gets killed or disabled for a minute.
Tentacle Smash: Passive: The Tentacles summoned by Illaoi can inflict increased damage throughout the game.
Active: When you use Tentacle Smash, Illaoi will slam a massive idol into the ground, unleashing a Tentacle slamming down within enemy range. It inflicts physical damage before disappearing.
Harsh Lesson: When activated, Illaoi’s subsequent basic attacks for 6 seconds gain 225 bonus range, causing her to dash to her target. However, if the target isn’t inside her base attack range, it’ll deal bonus physical damage.
Additionally, Harsh Lesson can reset Illaoi’s auto-attack timer.
Test of Spirit: This active ability is where Illaoi summons a tentacle in a target location, stopping when it hits the first enemy. If the enemy unit Test of Spirit hits is a champion, it’ll pull its Spirit, placing them in front of Illaoi.
The enemy unit will be then tethered to the Spirit and revealed while in effect. Spirit can have the unit’s current health and last for 10 seconds. However, Illaoi and her allies can attack the Spirit to deal damage to tethered champions.
The Spirit’s tethers will be severed if it’s killed or when the target manages to flee, slowing them down by 80%, marking them as a Vessel for 12 seconds.
Vessel: When Test of Spirit manages to mark enemy units as a Vessel, it’ll spawn a Tentacle nearby. They’ll all autonomously attack the closest Vessels or Spirits every 10 seconds.
Leap of Faith: When activated, Illaoi will leap into the air before slamming an idol into the ground, inflicting Physical damage to surrounding enemies. For every enemy champion you hit with Leap of Faith, a Tentacle will get summoned for 8 seconds.
Meanwhile, for the whole duration of Leap of Faith, Harsh Lesson’s cooldown is reduced to 1.1 to 2 seconds. Plus, it’ll make Illaoi non-targetable, leaving her to take half the amount of time to attack.

- Illaoi’s core ability is Tentacles, so never fight without them.
- Spirits can inherit the target enemy unit’s current health. So, if you want to make a Vessel, whittle the enemy’s health down first.
- Commanding attacks from Tentacles that are already performing can make it strike again directly after finishing its initial attack.
- It’s wise to pair Illaoi with an area of effect damage champion to help you amplify her damage.
- If you’re using Illaoi in Jungle, you’ll do well to use the time before camps spawn to set up. Use Tentacles at the first ones you want to clear.
- Damage inflicted to the Test of Spirit target won’t get redirected to the enemy Spirit. It’s best to establish Spirit beforehand to finish enemies when they flee from you.
- Setting up for Jungle gameplay also increases Illaoi’s damage output when in combat.
- Regardless if it’s active or passive, Tentacles can be targeted by Teleport.
- When fighting with Illaoi, pull out the Spirit of enemy champions and activate Leap of Faith fast to summon the max amount of Tentacles Illaoi can.
- Illaoi doesn’t possess hard CC or defensive abilities but is stocked on physical AoE damage and sustain. So, it’s best to pair her up with decent magic AoE damage champions.
- AoE damage inflicted by Illaoi will amplify for enemy champions if they simultaneously receive it with their spirits.
- When using Illaoi, attacking spirits count as champion hits. That’s why using the Kleptomancy rune is an excellent choice as it can proc with Test of Spirit seamlessly.
- A good defense can equate to great offense in rare cases, so use Spirit to pull out enemies near your turrets and Illaoi’s Tentacles.
- You can activate Grasp of the Undying on Spirits to make stacking health and healing easier to achieve. The bonus damage inflicted is relatively high.
