Is CS:GO a free-to-play game?

Hi, quick question to save me from confusion, had two friends telling me different things, one said he bought csgo and the other that he got it for free. So is CS:GO a free-to-play game then or do I have to buy it?

Hey dude, so back when CS: GO came out, you had to buy the game to play it, and more recently - like 6 years ago - it went free to play for the public on steam. I believe you still have to pay for other versions of counterstrike, such as CS:S.
