How do XP maps work in Fortnite?

I'm new to the game, so I'm still learning the details... Some teammates told me I should try XP maps if I want to level up, but I don't know what that means. What are XP maps? How do I level up by playing them?

There are a few maps in the player-made maps section where you can find "buttons" that you can push to dump XP into your levels. Im not sure how 'legal' it is to do it, but there are loads of pages that tell you how to find the button on each map, along with the map codes for said maps.
