Do you need to create an account on Riot Games to play LoL?

Tempted to try out League of Legends, since a girl that I like is playing it. Want to surprise her with it, but since I mostly played games on Steam until now, I wanted to ask if I need to create a Riot account to play League? Is it free to have a Riot account?

To play LoL you'll need a RIOT account, luckily it's free to sign up on RIOT and play any of their titles, just head over to leagueoflegends.com and hit "play now". After a quick 3-step sign-up you'll be able to play any of the games that RIOT has released, like LoL or Valorant.
