Can I drop ranks in Valorant?

I've had a few really bad gaming sessions, so I was curious to know if it's possible to actually drop ranks in Valorant? I guess it should be...but how does it work? And would it be more difficult to climb again, is there some kind of punishment system?

Yes, it is possible to drop ranks in Valorant if you consistently perform poorly in your games. The devs haven't told us exactly how it works - but it is generally believed that losing many games consecutively or performing badly over an extended period can result in a rank demotion. Climbing back up can be challenging since there is a loss of Rank Rating (RR) with each loss.
